The city of Calgary has no
more able, active and competent man in its service than Douglas Gordon
MacKenzie, who since 1913 has been superintendent of market, pound and
weigh scales, with offices in the city market. He was born in Melbourne,
Quebec, in February, 1873, a son of Andrew and Catherine (McDonald)
MacKenzie, the former a native of Glengarry district, Ontario, and the
latter of Scotland. For fifty years the father was engaged in the flour,
grain and feed business in Melbourne and Richmond, Quebec, in which he
achieved well-merited prosperity. His death occurred in 1920, and Mrs.
MacKenzie died in 1883.
In the pursuit of his
education Douglas Gordon MacKenzie attended the public schools of
Richmond, Quebec, and later took a commercial course in the Richmond
Academy. After putting his textbooks aside he conducted a general store
at Lake Megantic, for two years and then sold out at a substantial
profit and entered the service of the Dominion Express Company,
remaining in its employ for seventeen and one-half years. He was agent
at Revelstoke and Victoria, British Columbia, later at Edmonton and
subsequently he came to Calgary in the same capacity. A short time after
locating here he resigned his position with the express company and
engaged in the real estate business, under the firm name of MacKenzie &
Ross, maintaining that association for one and one-half years. In the
fall of 1913 Mr. MacKenzie accepted his present position as
superintendent of market, pound and weigh scales, and has since been
active in this important position, discharging his duties with the same
self-control, energy, perseverance and executive force which have made
his business career so successful.
In 1908 Mr. MacKenzie was
married to Miss Jean Henderson, a daughter of Peter and Mary (Snider)
Henderson. Mr. Henderson was an official of the British American Land
Company at Sherbrooke, Quebec. His death occurred in 1894, and Mrs.
Henderson has also passed away. Mr. and Mrs. MacKenzie are parents of
four children: Jessie Keith; Isabel May; and Andrew Grant and Gordon
Stuart, twins.
Fraternally Mr. MacKenzie
is identified with the Masons and lie holds membership in Zetland Lodge
No. 12, A. F. and A. M. of Montreal and Crescent Chapter, R. A. M., of
Calgary. His religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church. Mr.
MacKenzie is public-spirited to a degree, is ever interested in the
welfare of his community and stands ready to support every worthy
enterprise. highly respected by all who know him, lie enjoys general
confidence and goodwill, and through his own efforts has become one of
the substantial men of his part of the province. Mr. MacKenzie owns a
