Exploring Fogo
Island, Newfoundland and Labrador
Fogo Island is a cultural hub off the east coast of central
Newfoundland. Home to several old fishing communities, including one
that is also a National Historic Site of Canada, Fogo Island is a
fascinating meeting of past and present. With a seafaring legacy
dating back to the 1700s, visitors can wander through lush rural
landscapes dotted with old fishing rooms. Home to world-renowned
artist-in-residence programs, the island also boasts astonishing
modern artist studios nestled among wild coast.
Exploring Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador
Twillingate embodies everything so many Newfoundland and Labrador
outports are famous for: stunning coastline, historical, picturesque
streets, culturally-rich entertainment and peaceful country roads.
In the waters off the coast, you'll spy whales, dolphins, harp
seals, seabirds and — if the season's right — icebergs. Twillingate
is located alongside Iceberg Alley, a vast corridor of ocean that
runs from Greenland. One of the best places to view all these sights
is at Long Point Hiking around

Some photos from our trip to the Port
Aux Port Peninsula on the West Coast of the Island of Newfoundland
in July 2009. I hope you enjoy it. Music is by Buddy Wasisname and
the Other Fellers - Song for Newfoundland. A great song that depicts
the spirit of Newfoundland and the people who call it home.

Newfoundland - On the Shores of
Canada's Most Spectacular Coast
In Newfoundland, at the easternmost
tip of North America, the landscape is pristine, dramatic, and very
sparsely populated. In summer, icebergs occasionally drift along the
steep cliffs. When the "Titanic" collided with an iceberg and sank
just 300 miles off the coast of Newfoundland in 1912, the last radio
messages were picked up in a small wooden hut on the Avalon
Peninsula.
Today, most Newfoundlanders live on
Avalon. There are particularly many seabirds here. In Witless Bay,
the newborn puffins are ready for their first descent into the
Atlantic. But some stray onto the coastal road, attracted by the
lights of the hotels and restaurants. In doing so, they run the risk
of being run over. A team of volunteers saves the lives of countless
young birds: The Puffin & Petrel Patrol goes out at night dressed in
high-visibility vests to collect the puffins. Biologist Sabrina
Wilhelm then brings them back to Green Island, home to the largest
puffin colony in North America. Here, the birds catch up on what
they should have done long ago: the first dive of their lives.
What Happened to
Gander International?
In the middle of the forests of Newfoundland lies the world’s former
largest airport: Gander International Airport. But what was once a
global aviation hub, a listening post during the Cold War, a
loophole to the West and a refuge for stranded passengers during the
9/11 attacks, has fallen into oblivion. The film tells the story of
how the inhabitants of Gander are gradually moving away from the
great world stage and now have to reinvent themselves and their
hometown.
