College of Piping, Prince Edward Island

Here is some of the information I got while I was there...

Background

The College of Piping
and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada

SUMMERSIDE - The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada was established in 1990 as a non-profit organization and a registered Canadian charity. It is the only year-round school of it’s kind in North America and it enjoys an association with The College of Piping in Glasgow, Scotland. It is a world-class educational facility and visitor attraction with a mandate that aims to preserve and promote the Celtic heritage of Canada’s most Celtic province - and a history that defines Canada as a whole. A variety of study options are available for the serious student or Celtic enthusiast in the areas of traditional Highland bagpiping, snare drumming, step dancing, Highland dancing, fiddling and Gaelic singing.

Inspiring excellence in Celtic performing arts through quality educational programming continues to be the core mission of the College of Piping. The student body of the College has grown from only 30 students in 1990 to over 400 students in 2002.

The College of Piping is also Summerside’s busiest entertainment venue and has experienced a steady and significant increase in the number of visitors annually. The College of Piping’s Celtic Festival showcases Island talent in Celtic performing arts, allowing visitors to experience the Celtic culture and heritage inherent in a population of which seventy percent are of Scottish and Irish ancestry.

The College is an anchor in the tourism product offering of the city of Summerside - and the province of Prince Edward Island - and serves as an important tool for the promotion and the awareness of Canada’s culture. The College of Piping’s visitors and students hail from all over the world. Island youth especially benefit from the College’s programming through the Doug and Debbie Hall Scholarship which entitles all Island youth between the ages of eight and eighteen to study piping and drumming free of charge.

The College’s Celtic Festival brings this experience to the Prince Edward Island visitor. It showcases Island talent and impresses on visitors the importance and vitality of our culture. This is what they take home with them to New Brunswick, Ontario, New England or overseas - an impression of our pride and pursuit of preservation of our ancestral traditions.

Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Highland Bagpiping

UPEI & The College of Piping team up to offer Canada’s first degree program in Highland Bagpiping

The senate of the University of Prince Edward Island has approved that students interested in pursuing high-level study in the craft and artistry of Highland bagpiping, within the context of a liberal education, would be able to earn a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Highland Bagpiping at the University of Prince Edward Island once approval is received from the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission.

"The College of Piping has enhanced PEI’s rich heritage in Celtic culture by providing exceptional instruction in highland bagpipes," says IJPEI President Wade MacLauchlan. "Combining this with UPEI’s strength as a leader in liberal arts education makes sense. Graduates of the program will be well-rounded citizens with knowledge and cultural awareness."

UPEI would be the first university in Canada and the third in the world to offer a degree program with the option to specialize in Highland bagpiping. It will provide the opportunity for local, regional and international students to expand their skills and education in this field.

"The entire, worldwide piping community will be pleased to see that the University of Prince Edward Island has shown the initiative to establish this new degree program," says Scott MacAulay, Director of The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada. "I am confident that the number of students from around the world who come to PEI to obtain knowledge of the Great Highland Bagpipe, will continue to grow especially now that the students can leave with a degree."

Over the past ten years, The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada has established a reputation for being a leading international institution for learning the great highland bagpipe. Students from Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Singapore, the Marshall Islands and even Scotland have come to The College in Summerside to study bagpiping.

To be admitted to the program, students must successfully audition at the level equivalent to the Institute of Piping’s Certificate.

"The University values the opportunity to utilize the skills and talents of highly qualified instructors from The College of Piping as sessional teachers in the new program, "says UPEI Dean of Arts, Philip Smith. "The specialized instruction in highland bagpipes, combined with standard courses in music theory and history, as well as the wide range of electives available in the liberal arts and sciences, will create a unique learning experience for students."

Upon receiving approval from the MPHEC, the University expects to begin enrolling students in the 200 1/2002 academic year. UPEI will offer eight new courses, at different levels of individualized instruction.

Having The College of Piping in the province makes UPEI uniquely positioned to become the first university in Canada to offer this program. In September, 2000, The College announced the establishment of the Doug and Debbie Hall Scholarship Program which allows PEI youth between the ages of 8 and 18 years of age to study highland bagpiping for free.

"The response to the scholarship program has been phenomenal," says MacAulay. "With more than 200 new students taking advantage of the program, The College of Piping may effectively become, in part, a preparatory school for future candidates in UPEI’s new degree program in highland bagpiping."
