Hi Alastair, in reply to your
question about Sunday store closures, I can confirm
that Sabbath closures were the law all across Canada
from 1906 to 1985 under the provisions of the
federal "Lord's Day Act". The Act prohibited most
commerce on Sunday tho' certain services like
restaurants and gas stations could stay open. The
Act was ultimately declared unconstitutional under
the Charter of Rights and Freedoms by the Supreme
Court of Canada. In Saskatchewan where I grew up,
stores also closed on Wednesday afternoons to allow
for re-stocking, cleaning, etc. but we stayed open
late on Saturday nights because that's when the farm
families came to town. Pubs and liquor stores also
had to close on election days. Very different times! |
